SEO for small businesses: the only 5 things that actually matter

Forget the 200+ ranking factors. For a local small business, these five things drive 90% of your search traffic.

SEO guides are overwhelming. Most are written for marketing teams at large companies. If you're a plumber, electrician, or tradesperson, here's what actually moves the needle.

1. Google Business Profile

This is the single most important thing you can do. Claim your Google Business Profile, fill out every field, add photos, and ask customers for reviews. This is what shows up in the map pack when someone searches 'plumber near me.' It's free and takes 30 minutes.

2. Your website needs to say what you do and where

Google needs to know three things: what services you offer, where you offer them, and how to contact you. Your homepage should clearly state all three. Not hidden in footers or about pages. Front and center.

Example: 'Professional plumbing services in Bergen and surrounding areas. Emergency callouts, bathroom renovations, and pipe repairs.'

3. Mobile speed

Over 60% of local searches happen on phones. If your site takes more than 3 seconds to load on mobile, you're losing visitors and rankings. Use compressed images, minimal JavaScript, and a hosting provider with a CDN.

4. Get listed in directories

Consistent listings across Google, Yelp, Yellow Pages, and industry directories signal legitimacy to search engines. Make sure your name, address, and phone number (NAP) are identical everywhere.

5. Reviews

Google uses reviews as a ranking signal. More importantly, customers use reviews to decide who to call. Ask every happy customer for a Google review. Make it easy by sending them a direct link.

That's it. Skip the blog posts about schema markup and backlink strategies until these five are locked down.

Your website could be live tomorrow.

2 minutes to start. 24 hours to deliver. $0 until you love it.
